Canon T2i/550D HDMI Output Footages

*Please note: I’ve gotten huge traffic from this post and looked the responses on all the forums: I am not doing a simultaneous record to camera and MXO- this is ONLY the MXO while the camera is not recording so the image/capture below is indeed a cropped 1080i there is no simultaneous HDMI output when recording to the internal media- hope that helps*

I got my T2i in the mail about three hours ago so while I was doing some audio capture on one machine, I ran out and bought a mini HDMI to HDMI cable and hooked the T2i up to my MXO2 Mini.

Here’s a screen capture of the the captured source:

I dumped into Cineform’s ReMaster which told me it was a 1326mbits stream *EDIT* I was told this is the same regardless of pre/post stream* I’ve never tested this crap so cut me slack ;) - stream notes are identical to the uncompressed HDMI output on my Z7U. I converted it to Cineform 4:4:4 with pulldown removal and ended up with a cropped 1920×1080p24 clip.

Ideally, I would dump it into First Light and apply an offset 2.35:1 crop on it. However, that stupid little focus box (even with focus off) just sits there a few pixels above the bottom crop. If there was no gray bar on the top, I could be fine with the offset and mark my camera during a shoot.

What does work if you want to do this, is bring your transcoded piece into your project and apply a 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 crop and expand the clip slightly in a 720 timeline- perfect (esp. for web). You might want to keep a stock of wide angles around though. Keep in mind if you want to shoot this way you’ll want to mark your Cinedeck or computer monitor because guess what?

No LCD readout when the HDMI is plugged in- none, nada, zip, zilch, nothing. Hit video record on the T2i and you lose BOTH screens! Definitely intended for playback only. But still the good news is that it does appear to be uncompressed. So you’re limited to a studio or Cinedeck setting and the Nanoflash need not apply.

My greenscreen skills suck but here’s the final output (sorry for the soft focus, I didn’t dial it in completely):

I do have a Cinedeck beta coming so I’ll test it with that straight-away. And I’ll be honest, I’d really like a 720 center crop on capture that would eliminate these display issues though not ideal- I tried with my MXO2 Mini but the thing kept crashing (no surprise there).

So in closing, $800 for a camera giving you uncompressed 720 capture? Sweet. And I find myself cropping everything anyway because as someone on Twitter said the other day: “16×9 is so 4×3″ or something like that- my interpretation: “2.35/2.40:1 looks cool as hell…”

*EDIT 16 (or something like that) @SalaTar gave me some insight into testing it for MPEG4 breakups so I’m going to really push somethings on the camera and see what I can eek out.*

Ok. so sorry I'm new to this but does this mean i can bypass the 12 minute limit if i am just outputting from the HDMI and capturing with my computer? Because i need to do 30 minute roundtable type stuff and this would be AWESOME.
  • Yes

I am assuming that you mean that the HDMI Out, in Live mode, is 480p, when the camera is recording.

I am assuming that it is 1080p in Live mode when you are not recording.

I am also assuming that there is a white square on the HDMI out in Live mode when you are not recording.

Please let me know if you can get a clean image out of the HDMI port, no icons.

Personally, I am interested if the Live Out (while not recording) is 1080p, full screen, no pillarbox, and is clean.

To state the obvious, I am interested in recording the HDMI output and the camera does not need to be in record mode.

Can you talk about the signal data via HDMI, is 1080i 60, or can be 1080p 24, in 4:2:2?
  • It's 1080i60 at 4:2:2
  • Masivarecords
thanks. Then when a record in the camera the signal down to 480i. But I can record only in a Blackmagic Intensity 1080i 60?

In your experience the MOTION JPEG is a best codec vs the MOV (Image data: H.264)
  • Motion JPEG is okay...I would finish with something a little better like
DNxHD, Cineform or maybe ProRes. Will require a transcode but that's worth
it for uncompressed out of that little camera.

Thanks I built a portable pc for capture porpouses but uncommpresed will be need a three raid hard disk
  • If it's eSata, you can probably capture on a dual RAID 0 box. I have and
    it's just fine for speeds.

Just got my new T2i and love it for the stills, trying to get a good workflow for video... your site is great, thanks for the help.

I haven't plugged an HDMI cable in yet to test signal, but in video mode on the LCD screen you only see the white focus box if the lens is on "auto focus," but I noticed you commented saying "even with focus off" the box is still there. Are you sure? It seems strange that the HDMI signal is showing the box even when the LCD screen on the back of the camera does not.

I also wonder if the T2i has any HDMI signal going out while the camera is in any of the "still modes" ?
  • Yes, I am sure but feel free to test it yourself. I havn't played with
    HDMI out in stills mode.

I just tried the A/V cable that came with the camera and you can monitor live view on an external TV with that cable WHILE recording to internal media. It is 480 only, so it's not HD. Still better for checking focus than a 3" screen though. I didn't check it for color trueness or anything else, but focus is my main concern for this anyway, since I don't plan on recording straight to the computer as you are trying to do. Maybe (please) Canon will release a firmware making it so that the hdmi output will work too with full HD res.
  • Thanks for the info! I never tested the A/V output.

    Hi Jay,

Good to see what you are up to. I am a freelance editor / director / videographer and keen stills photographer :http://brettcorlettdigitalvideo.blogspot.com/

I have been following the the evolution of the Canon DSLR camera's and will probably purchase the 550D.
The HDMI output functionality is of interest. I have contact Canon here in New Zealand and asked them for the option of full 1920 x 1080 HDMI output from the 5D. My wish list was passed on the Canon in Australia.

So when I saw what you have been up to it is inspiring. I also have seen a site where a guy has written code to give better functionality to the 5D. Possibly he could enable full 1920 X 1080 output on the 5d, 7d and 550d?
Magic Lantern is the company: http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Magic_Lanter...
  • Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I'm lazy ;) Thanks for your
comments! Yeah, I'm hoping Magic Lantern will give something but I suspect
one of the next to camera versions will have what we all want: clean,
uncompressed HDMI out...or simply uncompressed capture of some sort.

I have to say, my simple H.264 conversion to Cineform doesn't leave me
lacking. I feel I have enough flex room with this camera and that workflow
for my needs; namely web and occasional auditorium screen. I'm pretty happy
with the key off of a Cineform conversion. It looks as good if not better
than my uncompressed capture from my Z7U.
  • Hi Jay, great post, thanks for sharing. I too am looking for an ideal live output solution for the 550D's (T2i).

I purchased a couple of them to make a multi-camera setup for a shoot of music tutorials. I was sold on the footage I was seeing around. The 12 min per clip with internal recording is an issue for me, so I wanted a solution to record into a PC or Mac, but can't find anything around. I did come across the MX02 that you're using and this is a possibility, but I'd need 1 for each camera and that simply pushes the cost of each camera way high.

My main camera is an HVX200 and this records the front view of my tutorials. Here's my green screen effort with that camera - http://crashcoursemuso.com/

The reason for going for a 550D is my overhead cam is fixed to a low ceiling and a camcorder is simply too big - enter the small 550D - perfecto! - well, so I thought. I need a 3 camera setup for my next course which is Crash Course Drums:-

    HVX200 - Main front cam
    550D - Overhead - full kit view
550D - Feet view (bass drum and hi-hat foot)

The workflow of capturing internally to SD card in .MOV format and then taking a couple of days rest whilst I transcode it into a usable editable format that Vegas can handle, is just tragic. It seems external capture is the only sensible route.

I've just come across another issue and that is after converting to an MP4 at 100% quality using MPEG Streamclip, Sony Vegas won't allow me to import those clips. I can only assume its because the MP4's now over 4GB in file size, so a trade off for a lower quality (say 70-80%) maybe the solution. Don't know if you've come up against this yet?

My end goal is to have 1280x720HD for my members area, so all web based footage.

Good luck with your continued testing and I'll let you know if I have any breakthroughs also.

    All the Best
    Phill Mason
  • Phil,
Thanks for the input and feedback!

Well, I use Cineform for all my conversions. The MP4's converted to Cineform
are just outstanding. In fact, so much so that I have no problem keying off
of them or correcting the others. The transcode is pretty fast too...you
might want to try the demo and poke around for their Vegas use...I'm pretty
sure it plays back fine in Vegas.

Right now, I haven't done any official greenscreen work on the T2i but like
I said, you can with no issue (I've found) with Cineform transcodes since it
resamples to 422 (or 444 if you have Neo/ProspectHD or something). That's my
recommended workflow, but it doesn't work for everyone.

  • Hey Jay, Great post. From your statement at the top of the post "...there is no simultaneous HDMI output when recording to the internal media..." then it is NOT possible to connect an HD TV to the T2i's built-in HDMI port to monitor video while recording to the memory card? The only way to monitor the recording live would be to use the EOS Utility and tether the T2i to a computer via USB cable?
  • Thanks Trevor...I'm a sucker for trying to record uncompressed ;) You are
correct. You cannot monitor the HDMI output while recording to the internal
media- in the above video I wasn't recording to the internal media as I was
capturing the HDMI output via my MXO2.

I haven't tested it, but I read with certain monitors, you can use the
included AV breakout cable and the output is 480. But again, that's just
what I read and haven't tested so it's not fact.

    Thanks for commenting!

I have the T2i / 550D and was disappointed by the fact that you can't monitor off camera (Live View) while having HDMI or A/V output... Being able to monitor off all 3 simultaneously would be perfect.. It is a shame as I just bought a new HD monitor and was unaware that this was the case.. So for those of you who had hopes of using a A/V or HDMI external monitor while using the Live View we are afraid this is not the case..
Maybe if we got on Canons case about it they might bring out a firmware update..
  • Thanks Jay, I'm looking for a new HD camera for a video podcast. I thought the T2i might be a good solution but maybe a regular HD camcorder would work just as well. I don't need to capture uncompressed video but I do need the ability to monitor the video being recorded on an external monitor. Do you have any suggestions for a camcorder under $1000 that would do this?

I know the Canon Vixia camcorders are pretty popular but there are several models to choose from. I remember hearing a while ago, guys were using the HV20 and running the HDMI out into a Blackmagic Intensity Pro and getting great uncompressed results.
  • Trevor, yeah this won't work for what you need. I left my A/V out cable at
home and heard you get real time monitoring from that output- I'll bring the
cable in from home tomorrow. If you don't need HDMI monitoring, the T2i is
the way to go simply because of the quality you'll get. The 7D however does,
but it's another $800 roughly. If you're looking for something under a grand
with HDMI monitoring output definitely check out the HV20/30. I haven't used
it but there's lots of good words about it.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks again Jay. If you get a chance to test the A/V cable on the T2i and can reply here that would be awesome! The cameras are on back order now anyway so it may be a few days before I can order one.
  • So, wait, it literally burns in that focus rectangle into the output? What is up with that?

I can tell you right now I'll never be cropping videos for 2.35:1. 16:9 isn't going anywhere as a format. That's based on my audience though, not a feature film audience like yours.

I think you mean, "eke" not "eek". =)

If I was testing for MP4 artifacts, I'd get a levels or curves adjustment going and push contrast to the absolute extreme - any artifacts should show up at that point. Also running diff frames with photoshop can reveal artifacts.

I wish I had the ability to get my hand on some real primes like Hurlbut, and see what these things can REALLY do.
  • You know, I probably should never say, "never".
  • Yeah, probably not ;) That vid's live now, you can see my crappy greenscreen job.
  • Hey man...i've been following the hd dslr thing for awhile...but one big reason i never took the leap is because no hdmi out for capture...i'm really glad you took the time to do this. i have a T2i now, MX02 LE, and various nle soft like fcp, ppro. Love to do some GS capture and not have to rely on my EX3 for that. Don't mind setting up my laptop and doing captures with a dslr if I can make it work too for me...
  • Awesome! Like I said, there's some live view overlay issues, but if you
could a 720 center crop on capture, you'll be golden. David Newman at
Cineform confirmed the output on these cameras as being uncompressed so
    that's a HUGE bonus.
  • Nice ... do you think there's any chance this stupid rectangle can be gotten rid of with a firmware update or even hack? That could be something for Magic Lantern ...
  • Seems like a Magic Lantern. Again, I'm thinking that if I could do a
hardware 720 crop at capture, I the gray bars top and bottom and the focus
box wouldn't be an issue at all. I was hoping for a scenario where I could
toss a Cinedeck in my backpack and just use the LCD for my monitoring on the
go, but there's no simultaneous output.

I would bet they could come up with something however, it'll probably end up
in the queue behind the 5D and 7D. Regardless this is an $800 uncompressed
720 camera with a cinema-sized sensor. Talk about a deal!

Allan, I agree 16x9 isn't going anywhere especially seeing as how it's the
digial broadcast standard size BUT people may want the 2.35:1 crop look. I
happen to love it but that's just me. And like I said above, dumping my 1080
into a 720 timeline is ALMOST perfect.
